Help! I really want this to work since my photoshop trial expired. Need a few features, are they available?

I just got used to Photoshop CS3 when it expired. There were a few features I used constantly that I can't seem to find comparable options on GIMP.

1. Ability to crop according to aspect ratio. You simply type in the dimensions you want and your rectangle or square for cropping sticks to that ratio.

2. Ability to custom convert to B and W by controlling the different colors with sliders.

3. The ability to fade the picture.

Please let me know if there are plug-ins for these features, or if not, is there any other program that has them?

Hi Stephanie - all of those things are available in GIMP, without plugins, I believe. 1. Crop aspect ratio: click on the crop tool, and in the options (usually below the tool panel) there is an option for 'Fixed' - you can then choose 'Aspect ratio,' 'Width,' 'Height,' or 'Size.' 2. In the color menu, there are many options to adjust the colours. I usually use 'Thresholds,' but another way may make more sense for your purposes. 3. Not exactly sure what you mean by this, but you can add another layer under a photo, and then change the opacity of the photo layer to fade it. There are filters to do this too, though I don't know the names of them off the top of my head. Also, check out the Plugin registry - there's a plugin there that lets you use PS filters with GIMP. I know exactly what you mean about cropping and resizing at the same time, I needed that too. I do a website with cars in a slide show and they all need to end up cropped at a specific size. It took me a couple of days to figure out, but you can make Gimp 2.4.5 do that in two steps, instead of one like Photoshop does. First you need to use the crop tool and set the option box for Fixed Aspect Ratio and enter your size as width:height Then crop your picture and adjust the box until you get what you want and press enter. Now it's the right ratio for the final outcome, but you need to scale it as a second step. Click Image, Scale Image and make sure the chain links are together, then enter your width and hit tab to make the height show, finally click on the Scale button. If two steps is too much of a pain, get on Ebay and pick up an older version of Photoshop Elements for about $20 and it does all you need for web work.
