working with 35mm negatives

Can anyone explain how I can work with negatives? I've scanned them into the computer but now what? Do I need a plug-in? Which one?

i seen this plugin on the forums:Digital Negative Calibration Pattern - creates B&W calibration pattern. Menu Item is placed in Gimp main window Xtn -> Script-fu -> Utils
