Problem opening .eps files

When I try to open a .eps file I get the following messages

Error starting Ghostscript. Make sure that Ghostscript is installed and - if necessary - use the environment variable GS_PROG to tell GIMP about its location.

I am new to GIMP but did try to find Ghostscript but could not figure out where it is.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm currently using Windows

I'm currently using Windows XP 64-bit with GIMP 2.6.3 64-bit and Ghostscript 8.63 64-bit.
I tried setting a system variable a few different times in case I had done something wrong, and no luck.
As a last resort, I copied gswin32c.exe (yes, the name still contains '32' in the 64-bit package) and it's libraries directly into the GIMP's bin directory, and it worked. I know this isn't the recommended solution, but the solutions provided so far did not work for me. I got the idea from http://registry.gimp.org/node/1616.

please help?

Hello, I am new to all of this and don't understand how to copy gswin32.exe and its libraries into GIMP's bin directory, nor do I understand what a bin directory is, but would really love to open an eps file with GIMP. Wish I knew more in general.

please help?

In this case the "Gimp bin directory" correspond to the bin folder ,inside gimp , usually in C:/Program Files/gimp

About copy well you select the thing and you click CTRL C to copy and when copied you click in the folder where paste and then you do Ctrl V

You do not need to copy libraries...

Gimp can't do much with EPS, in some cases not even display them correctly ...you may want use Inkscape for EPS, SVG and other vectorial files

It worked

It worked for me too. Thanks

Star man

worked for me too :D

Works for me

Great Solution, thanks for sharing :)

It would be interesting to

It would be interesting to know if you had tried to set the GS_PROG variable before.

It would really be strange if this did work for some and not for others - this isn't an esoteric setting somewhere in the registry, and can even be tested on the command line.

I'm currently using Windows

well may be not the recommended solution, but is simple to explain and it works.

Change a path so it will lead to X ,or move a copy of X so it will be on the path are 2 ways to get the same result ,
(only,in this case, very theoretic disadvantage the few Kb more of diskspace used for copy X )

But then i can't imagine how change configuration path may have not worked for you, it should.

Instead i may imagine well, because happened to me ,,that A window user may have mental blocks preventing him to fiddle with something called as "configuration path" even if the operation in practice is very simple.

Anyway in both ways will work

If you tell us which

If you tell us which variable you tried to set to what value, someone might be able to point out possible errors.

Setting environment variables has always worked for me, and I can't see any reason why it shouldn't work for others as well.

Problem opening .eps files - Windows Vistas Ultimate 64

OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64
Gimp 2.6.0 + Ghostscript 8.63 (gs863w64.exe)

Environment variable - System variable:
Name: GS_PROG
Value: C:\Program Files\gs\gs8.63\bin\gswin32.exe

It works very well.

Keep up the good work,

Odo.

Any news?

I have the same problem. I installed GhostScript, but no joy. I don't know how to tell the GIMP how to find it in windows.

OK, figured that out.

Silly me, should have done more research before posting.

To get ghostscript to work with the GIMP in Windows XP, you need to create the environment variable GS_PROG.

Right click on My Computer. Select Properties.

Click on the Advanced Tab, then on the button labeled Environment Variables.

Then click New. In the field Variable Name, enter GS_PROG. In the field Variable Value, enter the path to GS. On my system it is "C:\Program Files\gs\gs8.54\bin\gswin32.exe"

Restart the GIMP.

This worked GREAT!

This worked GREAT - thank you for your help!

Advanced Tab/button labled "Environment Labels" does not exist

Attempting to run Gimp (32bit XP) v226 with GhostScript v864 with the goal of opening and editing previously produced EPS, PDF, and Ai files in Gimp. Isn't this the purpose of using Gimp as an alternative to Adobe?

Ok. I apologize for acting like such a noob, but on my XP Sp3 machine the advanced properties tab does not reveal any such "button labeled, Environment Labels." Under My Computer/Properties I have two tabs, "General" and Shortcut". Below is a button labeled "Advanced". Once advanced is selected I am in an Advanced Properties view that is greyed out with two check box options, 1) Run with different credentials and 2) Run in separate memory space. No such button labeled "Environment Labels" exists. Just a thought, why isn't there a simple executable run during Gimp or GhostScript setup to engage these Variable terms and connections. Should we really have to do all this to make opening Adobe files work?

Please advise?

Advanced Tab/button labled "Environment Labels" does not exist

1) no the purpose of gimp is not to open or Edit AI, EPS or PDF
That may be the purpose of Inkscape, gimp work with bitmap not with vector.

still may open some of that files even if is far to be his purpose

2) I solved but in another way since i miss not some option but all "my computer" ( i have no idea how is translated in my language,
i can't find nothing similar)

So i did something deprecated but that worked well for me, i copy the 2 GS "exe" and i move the copy in the Gimp "bin folder.

Not the clean way but solved

Just a thank you!

Guys, Just a quick thank you!. With your solution, i got the GIMP to open my EPS files!

Thank you,
John.

Thanxs, it was what I needed

Great ! I was having that problem too and you gave me the solution. As every work needs to be paid, I pay you with a big shiny THANK YOU.

could not open eps

That did the trick. Thanks!

Ghostscript

Where can I download this script from? The search results don't seem to have a valid link to download the script.

??

Thanks, hopper

Ghostscripts

Hey Hopper, I found them @

GPL Ghostscript 8.61 released 2007-11-21

http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/ really slow download though.

Enjoy

Vista = Same PB

Hello Everyone,
I had the same message as CRRAR and I followed the instructions in this thread.
However, it still does not open EPS files. It installs GhostScript whenever I try to open a .eps file. Is it normal?
All it does then is a warning that it was not able to interpret the file I was trying to open.
I use GPL Ghostscript 8.63 and
Gimp 2.4.6
on Vista

Tx for any help one may provide.
Pier

you must use system

you must use system variables not user variables

Vista

I had same Problem. It function now with following uservariable
GS_PROG : C:\Program Files\gs\gs8.54\bin\gswin32c.exe

Hi, I have Vista 64 bits on

Hi,

I have Vista 64 bits on hp 64 bits.

gs870w32.exe does not succeed to instal

Vista 64 bits

I am not an expert but I looked at the above and adapted it for the recent update version of ghost script and it worked for me on Vista Ultimate 32.
Perhaps try the following for your vista ultimate 64:
Go to Control panel > System > Advanced system settings > Environment variables System variables >
1) Select New
2) enter variable name as GS_PROG
3) try entering C:\Program Files\gs\gswin32.exe
4) select OK
5) Select OK
6) Restart Gimp

(To double check look to check that you have the file gswin32.exe in the C:\Program Files\gs\ folder). If there is a folder called gswin64.exe you would refer to this instead, though it sounds like it is just the gswin32.exe file might also be used for Ultimate 64.
