Photoshop effect layering

I have a .psd file and on some of the layers I have 'Layer styles' applied to it, e.g. drop shadows, stokes, etc. When I open it up in GIMP all of my layer styles have disappeared.

Does anyone know of any plug-ins or any future development plans to fix this problem?

GIMP is adding methods that

GIMP is adding methods that are similar and maybe even superior to Photoshop's layer styles.See http://www.gegl.org/ for details (current versions of GIMP do already use this library, but without any effects that are visible to users).

This won't necessarily help to improve the PSD support, though - PSD is a closed format.
