What happened to image saving?

I just upgraded to 2.8.4 thinking that the UI would be a better one. What a disappointment! I'm trying to manipulate images but now I can't save them as png or jpg only xcf (which I don't know what the heck it is). I tried to export but when I export to a png and open it, it still shows up as xcf.

I wish GIMP developers understand that at the end of the day it's about the user experience.

It works for me. I always recommend a system restart after an install. if that doesnt work for you and If you had the original version installed when you installed the new version, perhaps try uninstalling the program(s), & then install the new one again.
