My Select tool stops working

I'm using the select tool to cell shade, and sometimes my select tool stops working, and when i outline the area and finish it, it disapears, the only way I get it working again is to save and restart gimp, but it keeps happening. i dont know if i'm accidentally pressing a command that makes it this way, but how do i get it to work again?
