Make background transparent

I use AGS and have characters that exist already as jpegs.
I need to make the background transparent.
Is there a way to do this fast without having to add the transparency
by hand?
I make the background transparent then crop the image as I can.
Then antialias and sharpen.

A technique that works quite well:
- make sure you have an alpha channel
- use the Wand with a 10-15 threshold to select the background. Don't forget the inside of some letters (A/B/D/O/P/Q/R as well as some lower case) (use shift-click to add to current selection). This should create a selection along the border or the characters.
- "Select/Grow" by one pixel, so that the selection now spills a bit inside the letters.
- "Colors/Color to alpha" and use your background color (use the color picker)
