Remove Alpha Channel

I'm looking for something like layer.remove_alpha(), which can be done at the layer menu (Layer/Transparency/Remove_Alpha_Channel) or at the Layer context menu (Remove Alpha Channel), but I haven't been able to fund a function to do this programatically.

BTW; I'm working on python.
