Create a video index

I'm trying to make an animated gif from an anime movie. I open gimp and go video>Split Video Into Frams>Extract Video. Select my file and hit Video Range. At the suggestion to create a video index I declined and tried to move the frame counter. It only went up to 2 frames and stopped. Being unable to move it further, I then told gimp to create an index which it has now been doing for over an hour. What do I do?

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium x64
CPU: Intel core i7 720
RAM: 6GB

Gimp Version: 2.6.11
Gap Version: 2.6

File Type: .mkv
File Size: ~8GB
Length: 95 min
Width: 1888
Height: 1040
FPS: 24
Audio Channels: 6
Audio Sample Rate: 44 kHz

That's all the info I could think of posting. Let me know if you need any other information.
Note: I had just created another animated gif using a different file (mp4, 3.5GB, 358min) without creating an index.
