Hello, I am brand new to GIMP, and am using it to colorize a B&W family wedding photo as a gift. I am a doofus, and it took me a couple of days to get it loaded and working, but at least I'm persistent! This program is stupendous!! I am using GIMP 2.6.11 for MacOSX, version 10.4.11Tiger.
I first made a practice sample on a simpler photo by creating separate layers for different parts of the picture (wall, curtain, dress, suit, skin, etc) and painting the object(s) in each layer. It is beautiful, but time consuming, and the actual photo I intend to colorize is much more complex. When I use the "colorize" option in the current GIMP without the plugin above, the effect is totally different than the above sites.
However, there is a quicker method, with sample, at: http://www.rfc1149.net/blog/2005/11/08/colorizing-a-black-and-white-phot... ; a click on the link to the "colorize plugin" states "Page not found" on GIMP Plugin Registry.
Another link in the same article goes to an abstract: http://www.cs.huji.ac.il/~yweiss/Colorization/ which shows some excellent examples of how this technique is done.
An associated site, http://zenthought.org/content/project/colorize-gimp has a download: colorize-gimp-20070930.tar.gz I searched this download on the GIMP site, but couldn't find it.
My question is, is the plugin credible, or not? I am leery of downloading it when it is not on your site. The ZenThought window does state the plugin is UNMAINTAINED ; can I assume that to mean that it may have been altered since the original design, so possibly questionable?
Thank you very much for your assistance! Kris
