All of a sudden Gimp will not work

I have been using GIMP for a year - then I downloaded the latest version 2.6.8 - I am unable to open any images - I will go to my hard drive - select a .jpg image - and it says:
"unknown file type"
I cant figure out what is wrong - can someone help me please.

Two thoughts
1) Bad install
or
2) You need to reassign your filetype associations
I'm guessing, of the two, it's more likely to be a bad install than to have filetype associations configured incorrectly (after a new install), but it has happened to me on a few occasions. Check your .jpg filetype association first and if its correctly assigned to GIMP, then consider uninstalling and reinstalling GIMP.
