Hand/grab move -canvas-, not layer?

Hello, hello! Sure as anything, the standard KB shortcut 'spacebar' gives one the Move tool, so that one can move layers, objects and selections.

I am however looking for an alternative tool that will simply move the canvas around- ie, push the canvas/artboard around so that I can continue painting in the next section of my art rather than disturb the placement of layers. Any suggestions/pointers?

Thanks!

then you can use the middle button for scrolling. Alternately, you can use the navigator widget in the lower-right corner of the image window (between the horizontal and vertical scrollbars). There is also the Navigation Dialog ("Windows->Dockable Dialogs->Navigation") which you can leave permanently open on your screen -- or add it as a tab to one of your docks.

the tip about using the middle mouse button really helped - it gave me the navigation crossbar! I'm not sure why I get the move tool and end up moving layer contents when hitting spacebar, but it could simply be a keyboard shortcut mixup.
I had to do a workaround to get my tablet to send a key modifier (in this case the 'option' key to x11), but it works perfectly and doesn't chage me away from the tool I am currently using at the time I need to move things (ie, the paintbrush).

It's .. hrm.. ironic to say the least that while I have expensive tools to use (in this case a cintiq), I still get jilted by the cost of the software to use it effectively.
Go, GIMP, overtake the corporate monopoly!

;) Thanks for the tip,

You can specify the behavior for the SPACE bar in "Edit->Preferences->Image Windows"

Space bar lets me pan the workspace here (gimp 2.6.5 on windows XP)

It's 2.6.8 I'm using, on OS X with a pen.
