Probs running Gimp

Hi
I have installed GIMP 2.2.8 as have crap comp with only win millenium installed but find it keeps shutting down on me during work?? help as it is getting really frustrating after de-installing in the hope that the lastest 2.4.2 would solve it but to find it is not compatible with my system!!! so have now re-installed 2.2.8 and still having original problem!!! AAaaggghhhhh
