is there any way of opening pdf files?

i didn't find any plug in for pdf files?

PDF is in the core

The core GIMP contains support for loading PDFs -- just open a file! However, GIMP is pixel- not vector-oriented. For better editing support, you may want to look at the new Inkscape version (0.46+), which has native PDF support. I never tried that part of it, but Inkscape is generally a great product.

when you say PDF, are you

when you say PDF, are you referring to the file extension PDF, the one we associate with adobe reader?

PDF is in the core ?

Maybe that is correct for linux In windows xp-vista to open PDF with gimp is required Ghostscript. And is not even sufficient have ghostscript installed , the exe file should be copied and paste (not just moved !) in the gimp bin folder. And may be some other details as a couple of dll to be pasted I suppose in Linux are installed by default all the dependency needed by Gimp to open PDF but that do not happen with other OS

Open PDF with gimp - Windows

First requirement is have both Ghostscript and Ghostview installed then (quoted from http://www.gimptalk.com/forum/topic/Unable-To-Open-pdf-reason-For-Doing-... ) There are two .exe files that you must put in the gimp bin folder. Both of those .exe files are in the gs folder. Do that and see if everything works. Your steps should be as follows for windows: 1. Install ghostscript 2. In the C:\Program Files\gs\gs8.61\bin (copy both .exe files only) 3. In C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\bin (paste the files) 4. Run the Gimp and when you go to open the .pdf you should be able to just preview the .pdf before even opening. Point is if you can preview the .pdf then you can open the .pdf If you cannot preview a .pdf then you have not done this correctly.

downloaded latest existing GS from sourceforge - not working

Just downloaded latest existing GS from sourceforge, did copy of EXE files into BIN folder of GIMP. STILL have problems opening PDF.

Ghostscript is no longer

Ghostscript is no longer used to load PDF files, this is done with libpoppler and included in recent versions of GIMP. You should be more specific about the problem.

Additionally, copying the ghostscript binaries around is bad; Photocomix should not provide such advice.

Ghostscript is no longer

quoting "Additionally, copying the ghostscript binaries around is bad; Photocomix should not provide such advice. " edit the configuration path was at that moment the only know alternative. Unfortunately many user's brains seems stop working when hearing about "edit configration path" even if the operation is simple Maybe you may have similar mental block to fix your Car in case someone would explain that you have just " to correct the setting of the injector" to solve, even if that is no too complex Somehow the concept of copy a exe and move the duplicate somewhere seems much more understandable and in pratice worked till now apparently without dangerous side effects Happy to know that now PDF support is included in gimp core that should solve any further problem

To summerize

Still the problem of importing vector-based PDFs into GIMP raster images is not solved... Is there something to be done or should I forget it? Thanks.

Seems to work for most

Seems to work for most people.

If you have a PDf file that does fail reproducably, then open a bug at http://bugzilla.gnome.org and attach the file there.

Specific Problem

The specific problem -or at least my specific problem- is the following. I have installed the latest version of GIMP. My OS is Windows XP. I have tried to open a vector-based PDF and it colud not do it. The message is "Failed to load document from data (error 1)". In Photoshop if you tried to open a vectorial PDF it would transform it into a raster image, after asking about kind of image for output, resolution and antialias method. Can you do that eith GIMP?

your path

i had the same problem but only with some pdf files. the pdfs that were in the directory "pläne" raised the same error. so your path should not contain any regional characters (i don't know if this is the right term for that :) ) hope this helps

Regional characters in the path is the problem

Hi!

I had a special Norwegian character in my path, and this gave me problems.
When I renamed the folder containing this character in the path for the PDF-file, it worked for me to.

Thank you very much!

Thanks!

I have spent the last hour trying to correct this problem but then I read your suggestion to move the .pdf file to a path without special characters and it now works like a charm!

IT WORKED!!!!

Thanks. It was a problem with the path. I use this function quite a lot, so very helpful!

Gimp Linux - Save PDF

Is there a way to save as PDF? I'm opening a PDF file to edit it as an image. Then I want to save it as a PDF again. When I choose "save as" PDF is not in the list of file types. I can do this in Photoshop so Gimp must be able to do it to!

Re-save as PDF

why? gimp is not a clone of photoshop. More PDF is more close to vector graphic then to bitmap, and gimp is a bitmap editor, not a vector editor. May work well to edit image extracted by PDF but to edit PDF, and save in that format you should use something as inkscape

Re: Save as pdf

Just use a pdf utility program such as PDF995 (there are others, this is free) and print as a pdf.

If GIMP is selected in this

If GIMP is selected in this years Google Summer of Code and if someone takes the PDF export project and does finish it successfully, then we might get better PDF export in GIMP.

See http://wiki.gimp.org/gimp/SummerOfCode2009ideas

(P.S. Please do not make me angry by adding any arbitrary project there.  Follow the guidelines in the introductory paragraphs of this page. Join #gimp on irc.gimp.org to discuss your project. Thanks)
