Creating a checkerboard wipe for my image (non-animated)

Hi folks,

I am pretty new to the Gimp but up to now I was managing.

The effect I am trying to achieve is basically a banner image where the first section of the image is intact image then there is a left to right "explosion or shatter effect and the image flies off as a series of tiles/cards/checkers etc.

This isn't an animation but just something to spruce up a rather droll banner

Any advice would be helpful. Does a filter exist to do this, can I somehow use a variation of the checkerboard effect?
Is there a brush or wipe that would do the job?
