Downloading and installing GIMP on Windows 7 64-bit

I am trying to download GIMP on Windows 7, 64-bit Home Edition.

It will let me download, and I can double click on the icon, and hit "run". After that, nothing else happens. I don't understand what's going on, as i have tried downloading the 32/64 bit installer as well as the regular one and none of them do anything.

Please help!

I'm having the same problem. The installer here..
Specifically "GIMP for Windows (version 2.6.10, unstable installer for 32 and 64-bit systems)"
doesn't appear to do anything when I run it on my Win 7 64 bit machine. I tried looking for an error in the event logs but could find anything related to the installer.

I think you guys are getting the download off the wrong website.
Try this one
It works fine for me and I have Windows 7 64-bit

Thanks for the reply but that's where I went.

The downloads page here...

refers Windows users to the installers by Jernej Simončič here...

On the right the Downloads link takes you to...

and down the bottom of that page is the installer I used.

Is there another Windows Installer on the site itself?

The Jernej Simončič installer says it's for 2.6.10 but I've noticed that there is also a windows installer for version 2.6.11 here..
"Download GIMP 2.6.11 – Installer for Windows XP SP2 or later"

Is that the one you used and does it also support 64 bit?

Most users I have talked to use the 32 bit version for their 64 bit OS because its not as buggy as the 64 bit version. I am using the 32 bit on Win 7 (64 bit). I tried using the 64 bit and experienced a lot of crashes and errors.

Not to mention several cool plugins are either not easy to implement or have no compiles for 64-bit GIMP like PSPI for instance as well as Filter Factory Converter. :)

not all the filters will work.

No, it's not the wrong website. Compare the links on with the ones at

Select the link on the Gimp > Downloads section > Gimp for Windows XP SP3 or newer...
Once you have downloaded and installed Gimp:
1. Create a shortcut on the Desktop if you have not already done so.
2. Right click on the Gimp shortcut, select properties
3. Select the "Compatibility" tab
4. Select the checkbox "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
5. From the dropdown list directly under the checkbox, select "Windows Server 2008 (Service Pack 1)
6. Click the "Apply" button
7. Select the "OK" button
8. Double click the shortcut to launch Gimp (you should then see the expected loading screen)
9. Design some sweet stuff

If you have any other issues, search the gimp forums for further assistance. I have not had any issues as of yet, thanks to all those who helped to create and maintain Gimp, the stuff of legends!!
