How do I make an image transparent in order to overlay it onto another image, so that both images show on finished combination image?
I'm a newbee and have the same question. Is this possible with GIMP?

There are a couple quick ways to do this that I can think of.
Have each image on it's own layer ->
1) Adjust the layer transparency of the topmost layer.
2) Change the layer mode of the topmost layer to overlay (or play around with other layer display modes)
3) Add a layer mask to the topmost layer and dodge/burn in the top image as you wish.
You could combine these ideas in a more elaborate manor to get what you wish as well.
