I've never tried GIMP. I've downloaded it but not yet installed it. I am anxious to try it out.
I just got a Nikon D5000. Does GIMP have a RAW plugin for Nikon cameras?
How does one install plugins in GIMP?
Yes. UFRaw->http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/. "For Nikon users UFRaw has the advantage that it can read the camera's tone curves. Even if you don't own a Nikon, you can still apply a Nikon curve to your images".
I see that memhat has already answered with UFRaw. There are also open RAW plugins which should be built into your distribution (Linux).
As for plugins, you copy them to your plug-ins directory and scripts to scripts directory. Then restart gimp.
How do I get it to work with Gimp 2.8 every time I try to install it, it says it is missing a dll file but it really isn't missing. the dll file is libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll?
Please help, I would like something other than my cameras software to open my raw files and edit as well...
You're getting missing .dll message probably because you have more than one libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll file in GIMP.
Are you using Windows? Try this.
1. Uninstall UFRaw.
2. Download libpng12-0.dll (you'll find it in description) and ufraw-setup from http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/Install.html#MS
3. Install UFRaw to default location - Program Files or PF(x86) if you're on 64-bit Win. Do not run it. It won't start
4. Copy all these files
a) ufraw-gimp.exe from C:\Program Files (x86)\UFRaw\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\
b) all .dll files from C:\Program Files (x86)\UFRaw\bin\ - Do not copy ufraw and ufraw-batch executables
c). Downloaded libpng12-0.dll file
5. Place all these files in your C:\Users\Username\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins\
6. Open GIMP.
7. Drag&Drop your camera's RAW image file in GIMP.
It should work.
Thank you so much..That worked.. Yay.. :D
how do i get this to work on my 32bit windows system?
I followed the steps listed above. I can now take a .nef raw file and open it in Gimp. However, the file does is not being opened up correctly. I took the photo should be 3872x2592, it was a 10mb file. When it gets opened up, however, it appears as a 160x120 image.
Do not set raw file association to GIMP. There are different ways to open file. Drag and drop your .NEF over canvas or toolbox area of GIMP or right-click on file and choose GIMP but do not change the default program. Hope this helps. If not, make sure your copied the right files to the right folder, repeat steps if necessary.
