Opening .eps files

Can someone help me with this issue.

I have recently received an e-mail containing and .eps file of my company logo and I have installed IRFANVIEW in order to download and view it.

But now when I attempt to open it in GIMP 2.8.2 I get the error message below. I have installed Ghost Script but it didn't appear to make any difference whatsoever the file would not open and I was presented with the same error message.

GIMP Message

Plug-in crashed: "file-ps.exe"
(C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\libgimp\2.0\plug-ins\file-ps.exe)

The dying plug-in may have messed up GIMP's internal
state. You may want to save your images and restart GIMP to
be on the safe side.

Hi everyone. I'm having the same problem on a new download of Gimp 2.8.6. Will someone please help? I'm stuck without being able to open EPS files.

EXACT ERROR:

The dying plug-in may have messed up GIMP's internal state. You may want to save your images and restart GIMP to be on the safe side.

I'm new to Gimp, have successfully installed it on my Macbook and now I'm trying to add support for EPS / PS files.

I've installed what I think is Ghostscript 8.71 (I've found many versions of Ghostscript, but this is the only one I found so far with a Mac installer & I've failed to install 9.05 as it wanted a C compiler to install and could not find one !! Not end user friendly)

I have received the message reported above at least once (or at least a very similar message), now when I try to open an EPS file Gimp reports "Opening '/Users/username/Documents/myfile.eps' failed: Unknown file type"

I see posts about setting environment variables, for the path to Ghostscript - but can't find where to set this.

There doesn't really seem to be any good guide to installing Gimp & Ghostscript on Mac - and the guides on the individual products don't really help with the other product

Any advice on how to get this all working would be much appreciated - I get the impression much has changed in the more recent versions of both bits of software & the online help/discussions are now out of date

Same story here. I'm running GIMP 2.8.6 on Windows 7 and have installed / set-up the environment variables for Ghostscript 9.09
Here are my errors:
