How do I count the number of pixels in a selected area? (probably simple, can't find any info)

I have just been searching for the past 40 minutes in order to find a plug in or a method (using script-fu or... well I've never used it before but if there was an established way I could find online somewhere I was pretty sure I could make it work)... okay that's a bit garbled but I've been searching for a method to count the number of pixels in a selected area. That's all pixels, not black pixels or pixels of a certain colour but simply the exact (or near exact) number of pixels in a selected area.

My problem comes in that the selected area is a very odd shape, lots of curves and dents etc, the reason is I have a rough floor plan of a building to which I know the square footage but I need some measure to relate it to within the image so I can place to-scale furniture within the floor plan. Not knowing how many pixels relate to what square footage makes this very difficult. I can estimate, extremely roughly but the shape of this building is incredibly irregular making it very difficult.

Can anyone give me a quick method of counting the pixels in selected area? If it's in script-fu then if a clearly annotated example could be given I would be incredibly grateful.

Thanks to anyone who replies.

Take the Pixels value from the histogram window (Windows->Dockable Dialogs->Histogram)
