Invalid DDS file / Invalid DDS header! / DDS image plug-In could not open image

Hi,
I wanted to use Gimp for trying livery modding in Dirt 3 as I saw it had a DDS plugin (which I downloaded and installed), - but looks like either I am doing something wrong, or something is amiss with the plug in.
I am running gimp 2.8 on windows 7, 64 bit and I am having this problem when trying to open a DDS . Error message I get is:
DDS image Message
Invalid DDS file.
DDS image Message
Invalid DDS header!
GIMP Message:
Opening 'C:\Users\Phil\Documents\Computer Stuff\Dirt 3 Modding\Cars for modding\for\livery_01\textures_high\for_tex_high_01.dds' failed:
DDS image plug-In could not open image
Also atttahced the error message
Can anybody help please?

Can you open any other DDS
Can you open any other DDS files? Try some that are from the games/applications you're working on right now.
Not able to open any DDS file converted from pssg file
The files I am trying to open were originally pssg files which I have converted to DDS using Ryders PSSG editor.
I stupidly just saved them as DDS to start with instead of exporting them. However, I am still not able to open the DDS files in Gimpeven after correctly exporting as DDS.
Error message I get now after conversion is:
DDS image Message
Unexpected EOF.
GIMP Message
