Greyscale fade-out gradient from existing colors

So I scanned a drawing made fully with pencil shading and all and I would like to color it with Gimp.
To do that I would have to make the picture transparent on all the white spaces and become slowly less transparent the more black/grey there is.
Is there a plugin that does that for me?

You shouldn't need a plugin, Layer->Transparency->Color To Alpha (White is the default) ought to do it.

You could create a layermask initialized to grayscale copy with the "Invert mask" option checked (then apply the mask).
