How to apply a color gradient to a font or text.

I have some 3-d see through text or fonts that id like to fill with color. When I hit the bucket icon it covers on top of the text.

I know we can change the color of the text to be a solid color. If I wanted to fancy it up with a gradient how would I do this?

and select "Alpha to Selection"
The text must be on a transparent layer for this method to work.
Once the text is selected, select the gradient tool in the toolbox and select the gradient fill you want from the tool options dialog that opens with the gradient tool.
Then just click on the image and drag for your gradient fill.
To fill with a pattern or color you can select a pattern from the patterns dialog and go to Edit>Fill With Pattern.

Hope that helps.

Wow thank you it worked and the font looks awesome!
