The G'MIC plug-in for GIMP proposes a set of various filters to apply on your images, including artistic effects, image denoising and enhancement algorithms, 3D renderers, etc.. It is a quite large plug-in, integrating a lot of different effects.
This plug-in is able to :

G'MIC has been written by the author of GREYCstoration, a GIMP plug-in dedicated to image denoising and smoothing. All former GREYCstoration algorithms have been improved and integrated into G'MIC.
Latest version of G'MIC is numbered 1.5.5.0 :
A quite complete overview of available image effects can be seen on the official G'MIC plug-in page.

Who does not like GMIC ?
Does anyone know why the best set of filters GMIC is not installed automatically with the Gimp?
Because the GIMP staff want
Because the GIMP staff want maintain the code as simple as possible
C++ is a "problem" for GIMP developers
GIMP is developed in pure C, and C++ is one language that seems to be not welcome for code contributions.
That's their choice, why not.
I simply hope they will retain the compatibility of the plug-in API in their future versions.
I won't develop a new G'MIC interface to GIMP from scratch again !
The best should be included automatically.
Without GMIC Gimp seems (at least for me) very poor. For beginners (children and young) members of his installation is a problem - why the best additives are not added to the first installation of Gimp - as with other scripts or plug-ins ?
GIMP Plugin Registry does not affect the contents of the installation package ?
All you can install yourself - but the best should be included automatically.
Gmic , Script Fu & Python
You provided a example of script fu calling GMIC but seems nobody could find it ,because is not in the Docs or reference
I think will be a good idea post it (here link http://gmic.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/gmic/gmic/src/gmic_in_script.scm?...) as a new script in the registry , (with a name as Script fu_gmic template ) so may be noticed and anyway easily found
BTW i suppose also python scripts could call gmic..correct?
PS a brand new script fu that use gmic is here http://www.registry.gimp.org/node/24930
and is maybe the best "cartoon " script i tried
G'MIC 1.4.5.1
Today, I've released a small update of the G'MIC package, namely the 1.4.5.1 version. Here are very few changes compared to the 1.4.5.0 (and that sounds like a positive thing to me :) ) :
- Raised precision for the sliders in the G'MIC for GIMP plug-in (requested by PhotoComiX).
- Windows version of the plug-in now output log messages in a specific log file instead of the standard output (which requires a terminal, knowing this is pain to get a decent terminal on Windows). The log file is located in the default Temporary path, and is named 'gmic_log.txt'. People can now look at this file to see what G'MIC commands have been used to generate the result in the plug-in
(setting the 'Verbose' mode is mandatory by the way).
- New bash completion file has been created. It is installed by default when installing the debian package for G'MIC. That is useful to auto-complete command names and arguments when invoking 'gmic' from the command line (with the TAB key).
- Corrected a bug (reported by zonderr) related to the invalid reading of custom filter files in the GIMP plug-in when last character of the file was not a carriage return.
Hope you'll enjoy it !
As always, it is already available for Windows and Linux. Mac version to follow (I guess).
G'MIC 1.4.5.0
I'm happy to announce the release of the G'MIC package v.1.4.5.0.
It has some nice new filters and the internal G'MIC engine has been debugged quite a lot.
Hope you'll enjoy it.
Can't get it to show in GIMP
I hope I am posting this right...first try.
I have the file that is installed (by the downloaded installer gmic_gimp_win32.exe) called gmic_gimp.exe in several folder now. I at least have it in C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins and I have it in C:\Users\Nick\.gimp-2.6\plug-ins.
Both of those folders are set in the Preferences in GIMP. But I simply cannot get the plugin to load even after I restart GIMP.
Any help greatly appreciated.

That's because the executible
That's because the executible at the registry is an installer and not a plugin. Just move it to your desktop and double-click on the file and it should place the right files in the right places. Not sure if it distingues between XP and Vista/Win7 though. I usually just download the zip file and move the files in the right place manually (don't like installers if I don't have to use them). :)
Thanks for the reply. I
Thanks for the reply. I realise that the downloaded file is an installer. I ran the installer and it loaded file(s) to the two folders I named: one download to one folder, another to another folder (??). But I still cannot see the plugin.
The file I downloaded is called gmic_gimp_win32.exe. The actual installed file is called gmic_gimp.exe.
Where do I get the zip version? That may help.
